The Rod Whisperer!!
Posted: 5th Aug 2012
It's Monday morning and I'm going down to Peg 1 with the breakfasts for the new lads, "What are you doing?" I said to Ben "Talking to the rods mate", was his reply, "My Dad did it last night and he had a 31lb mirror!!" At this point I'm laughing my socks off because he is deadly serious, and then he says, "John And Rob in pegs 4 & 5 have been doing it and had fish, so I thought I would give it a go while no one was looking!!" I replied "If I catch you licking those rod butts you're banned!" Class.
This was a new group of lads made up of three good mates and the "Big Old Silver Back" (Ben's Dad). Ben and John were the more experienced carp anglers, but they all fished well and had a cracking week, along with them being a great bunch of lads who made the week a memorable one for me also!!
They stuck to a game plan of little and often baiting following on from Week 17 results, and the lads started catching consistently throughout the week over the "Sanctuary Pellet" and boilies again. All broke a pb, and the highlight was 15 fish on the bank on Wednesday, with the best going 43lb 8oz and once again spawned out and flat as a pancake. Ben and his Dad stuck with more pellet and had more fish, but John in Peg 5 took 2 days to get going with the boilie approach, but came good hitting his target of a 30lb mirror and common along with one of the best looking scaley mirrors he had seen, good angling young man!!. The week ended with 33 fish in the bag, best being 2 fish of 43lb+, 10 x 30lb+ ( including2x 37lb & 1x39lb) 8 grassies on the Cell bait again all around 26lb-30lb, 8x 20lb+ (including 3 over 25lb+ & 2x 29lb+). The lads did have 5 upper doubles of the scaley stock again and when they are all back to 23lb+ towards the back end, wow they will look stunning.
Cell, Lucky 13 fishmeal, Fusion, New Grange all caught fish this week. 6 fish lost and I think all on the Korda Curved shanks AGAIN!!! Esp Raptors banking every fish hooked. Another point worth mentioning is the Mainline range of bait is all on the soft side so try and airdry before you come if using any of their range.
All in all its been a cracking July month and one of the best we have had, the spawning is now finished and for the first time in a while the fish are really getting on the feed and spreading out over the full length of the lake. Has stopping the baitboats started to work already??
Thats all for now and we will be back soon.
