It's Spring Time Again
Posted: 19th Oct 2012
What a turn around with the weather, after all that cold rain plummeting the water temp by 7 oc it has turned full circle with a very strong Southerly wind and 22oc!!! You could not call the change and it reminds me of the last week of the season in 2011 when the same big warm wind whipped up and some very special fish came out.
I think the fish and animals have not got a clue what to do, is it winter or spring?, do I eat or hibernate? Yesterday there were ladybirds everywere, a Slow worm on the path down to the lake, Red Squirrels running around the garden, it just feels like spring compared to last week with the fire going on in the house and nearly touching freezing outside. I also had a cracking view of two male Hen Harriers just a field away from the lakes floating over a corn stubble field hunting mice in broad daylight, fantastic.
The fish are playing hard ball but the rewards are there all the same, with so far the best 49lb 12oz and a 48lb this morning, 41.8,39.8,36, 33.8,33 and a 29.12. Only 8 fish out but with an avergae of 38lb 8oz it's all good. Last weeks average was 35lb for 28 fish so I'm happy with the way things have moved forward for the back end of this season, and not just weight but the fish being in good condition and ready for next spring!!!!!
The crayfish seem to be almost no existent this year, so the measures put in place have been very successful which is also another result.
Lots of fish crashing at night but not many signs in the day this week, there are so many fish in peg 1 now on the teeth of this very warm wind but not wanting to feed in ernest? Neil had to listen to "pavement slabs" being thrown out of the trees into his swim all night but no pick-ups forthcoming, strange.
Only two weeks left and counting, and with this mild weather hanging around for the next few days hopefully some more good fish will grace the bank? We shall see.
