First Fish Out Is? & Osprey Is Back

Posted: 31st Mar 2013

The weather has been bitter for the latter part of the week and it has been around 2oc for most of the day on Friday with the odd flurry of snow and a biting N/E wind. The fish have slowed down a little, with the temp drop again and the water has started to become gin clear again in the margins with that lovely aqua/blue colour tinge to it.

The lads arrived yesterday and all in good spirts despite setting up in freezing conditions and rain, we got all the bivvys up quick/sharp, and we left the lads to settle down for the night. This morning it was a hard frost and temps of -2oc the lads had rods frozen to the buzzers, and ice in the carp cradles, but Karl in peg 1 broke the silence with the first fish of 2013 with a mirror of 49lb 9oz, great start.

We will have to see how the week pans out, but we need a rise in the temperatures to get the fish moving again like earlier in the week when they started real clouding the lake up with their grubbing around.

The Osprey has returned again, with my first siting on Thursday afternoon on the big lake. There is no mistake spotting this stunning bird and even at 150 yards his bold, nobel stance and white collar around his neck, perched on top of a dead tree I new it was him instantly!!! On Friday whilst removing the predator twines from the lake before the lads arrived I spent most of the day in the boat backwards and forwards with the Osprey circling above, no more than 20 meters up which is by far the best view I have had of him, just magical and it really made me evaluate how lucky we are. The lads on this week were lucky to see this bird the same week last year plummit into the lake about 20 yards from the bank in front of peg 3 and I always remember Paul saying " It was a like someone had dropped a TV from space into the lake" so lets hope we get a repeat this week?

The sun is set to shine for most of the week now, so with a drop in the wind it should feel more like spring and those big girls will start waking up for some tea!!!

Back at the end of the week with an update and a few pictures.
