Amongst The Weed

Posted: 13th Jun 2017

It appears we have a few small patches of weed present in the lake, dotted around pegs 3,4,5. Nothing to shout about and not visible on the suface, but these short defined areas seem to be a major feature at the moment. The fish are still behaving a little moody and not venturing far from where they spawned, and it seems they keep returning to the weed to browse over the top feeding on naturals. I keep seeing plumes of clay coming up from the lake bed especially around 4 & 5 and very close in......with the fish still showing themselves in a very confident fashion with more fiish cruising around the middle parts of the lake without a care in the world.

We had 4 new chaps on the lake this week.....father & Son  (Paul & Jed) along with two old boys still getting out and making the most of fishing & life!

It appeared Steve in Peg 4 was the most consistent this week with the fish holding up in one of the small weed beds I mentioned. He fished a bait just at the back of it along with a scattering of baits put out with the throwing stick produced a pick-up each day. Jed dropping in 2 and Dad in 3 working hard with some fish being present in 1 in did give Paul fish early on in the week but the fish seemed to stay in 5 for most of the week and at times it was black with them. Ernie was getting too many line bites but no pick-ups so he decided to move into 4 with Steve after a couple of days which was a mistake if I'm being honest. With so many fish present I think it was just a matter of time, but they came together and enjoying the week is the most important part of all. Jed picked a few smaller fish up along the way but like I said it was Steve catching consistently throughout the week.

The best fish did fall to Steves Rods at 49lb 12oz, close to the magic mark but she was holding spawn so he put her back quickly without stressing her which I respected him grately for. It's nice to see anglers putting fish care first over images, assessing the situation and doing what's best for the fish is a sign of a respectful angler.

The week total ended on 11 fish landed along with 4 upper double stockies. Apart from the bigger female all the other female fish were completly spawned out and looking very flat indeed, which bodes well for the second part of the season. Quite a few upper 30s in the catch along with a high percentage of males which show they have come back on the feed first.

It was a pleasure once again to see new customers for a change and get some lovely feedback of how special the venue is.....all we need now is the fish to start getting on the bait again!!

We have just had another group of new anglers on the lake this week, along with a couple fishing the larger lake which was very interesting indeed. Signs of fish spawning on both lakes again but the contrast between the two lakes could not have been anymore different......more to follow about that in the next blog.
