Thunder & Hail

Posted: 14th May 2014

Well here we go again, the weather has turned on its head and the fish are perplexed what to do. This Spring has been very dry with no rain fall but the April showers seem to have arrived late in May, along with some very cold weather for this time of the year.

When the lads arrived this week the fish were crashing in Pegs 4 & 5, also fish had been clouding the bottom up very close into Peg 3 also after no one fished it the week before. Peg 1 was crystal clear and not a fish to be seen, but the lads all made their swim choice and settled in for the night. Well the following day you could not have turned the weather more on its head in such a short period of time. Very cold, strong winds combined with driving rain pushed the fish from the shallow end straight down into Pegs 1 & 2 again. Richard in Peg 3 took a 43lb as they moved through while Ray in Peg 1 took a 26lb mirror & a 43lb Mirror on the Sunday. Monday, Rich took a new 50lb 4oz fish from 3 and a 44lb Mirror for Ray. After this brief run for the chaps, the weather got worse plummeting the lake water temp and putting a blanket of silence over the lake. Nick & Neil from Pegs 4 & 5 moved into Peg 2 for 24 hrs after baiting there swims and giving the area a rest. With fish showing in Peg 2 the lads set up a small bivvy for the night and decided to go light with no bed chairs, sleeping on the ground sheet and hoping for a few fish, brave I think!!!! That night another storm came in, with driving rain hacking in through the bivviy door the lads got drenched with their kit-bags completely wet through and leaving them fish less. Well Tuesday they went straight back to 4 & 5 and with all the bait gone from the margins, they felt more confident with Neil taking a 38lb 12oz from close in on the left hand margin. Ray took a Grassie of 29lb+ followed by another 40lb+ fish Tuesday evening, and with the weather set to pick up again I'm hoping the fish react the warmer weather.

With few fish it's good to see the average weights very high and hopefully they can start to think about spawning again over the next few weeks, but that's anyones guess at the moment.

Back soon
