The Meat Monster
Posted: 19th May 2013
Another week has passed and it could'nt have been more enjoyable. It was a family affair, with Geraint, his brother "Big Lewis" and Dad Alun pitting their wits against the fish. The lads came a couple of years ago and it was great to see them again because there are'nt enough people in the world as genuine as this group, top lads all round.
Now the "Meat Monster" in peg 4 had put a few extra lb's on since we last saw him, and I'm not talking lard, so straight away he needed extra bacon each morning to keep him quiet. He would get on the Walkie Talkie in the morning if I was gas bagging with his Dad or brother to speed me up a little because he was hungry!!!! What a lad!!. Apart from that he thought he would get the other boys on the back foot with his first 5 out of 6 fish going 40lb+ which is some average. Fishing Peg 4 and casting his RHR down to the bush facing peg 5 he picked one up each night over his baited patch. Alun in Peg 1 and Geraint in Peg 3 were just picking the male fish up as the temp started rising close to spawning temp, and the males milting on the mats there was every chance it was going to happen this week, but the weather turned on its head again with a cold wind and heavy rain stopping all chances for another week. The females have very soft bellies now and the males are ready to go, so it will not been long if this weather sorts itself out.
Fish were coming to bait early in the week, and then just small patches seem to work best when the weather changed, so it was a case of thinking about your fishing. Geraint in Peg 3 fished his balls off and is a damn fine angler, but he could not get amongst the better fish. His Dad finished off with a brace of 43lb 8oz mirrors at the end of the week including a stunning golden 30lb Common and a great looking big long male Mirror.
Only one smaller Grassie this week, which is strange because only a handful have been caught this year.
Best fish went 45lb to Lewis and they ended the week on 22 fish, with 7 over 40lb+, 6 over 30lb+ and 8 randy 20lb+ males (including 2x29lb) finishing the total. A few nice mid 20lb Fully Scaled/Heavy Scaled fish caught this week and Lewis had a 39lb male, Mirror which is just stunning. Not seen this fish for 12 months and last time it was 33lb so it's done 6lb in the last year and is a great fish for the future.
Sanctuary Pellet, T1 Fishmeal & Premier Baits Fishmeal doing the business, the lads soon worked out the Fishmeal had the edge this week.
On the wildlife front Alun said he had seen a few birds that had a black band over their face, about the size of a Starling with pointed wings flying over the shower block. I was not sure what he had seen until 3 Bee-eaters flew over the house the same day, which is the first time I have seen them here at the lake. Night Herons are about at the moment and the Golden Oriole calling all day long along the far bank looking for a mate.
The new group arrived yesterday, greeted by very cold strong northly wind and raining hard, after 30 min's it changed so we got the bivvys up ready for a very stormy Eastly moving in and smashing down to Peg 1, along with branches falling off the trees everywhere because of the strength of the wind. It did look perfect conditions so when I was greated with happy lads in the morning I was not surprized. First fish out for Nick was our long awaited first 50lb 2oz fish of the season followed by another mirror of 48lb so first two fish were good ones, let's hope it continues before they spawn.
