You Cannot Be Serious Man

Posted: 6th Apr 2014

It could not have been a more cracking start to the season, not just the fishing but the weather has been bliss, signalling the start of Spring in full bloom.

I think when the chaps arrived the fish had just started moving and waking up & starting to look for food in earnest. The bulk of the fish seemed to be shoaled up in front of Peg 3/4 and as the week wore on with the sun starting to penetrate the upper layers increasing the water temp, the fish started moving to most areas of the lake. Graham took the first fish of the year within an hour of casting out from Peg 3, being a 37lb mirror. The Sunday was quiet but then once the lads got there spots established the pick-ups seem to build each day leaving the best til last. Graham took a 42lb+ on Monday and Mcenroe in Peg 1 took a 43lb Mirror which was a nice kick start to his week. Well, Good Old John Mcenroe just kept the bait trickling in all week building his swim, catching a few more fish with a new pb Grassy of 31lb+ and then smashing his pb on the Friday with a Mirror of 50lb 12oz pictured below. I have not seen an angler so ecstatic for a long time, and he was walking on air after that fish, it bought back memories of my first, double, twenty, 30lb and so on, with that feeling that lasts forever of why we love fishing so much!! Well done John.

Dave down in Peg 5 had very few fish in front of him so a quick move to Peg 2 for the day saw him putting a 39lb+ on the bank within 30 minutes followed by another fish, great angling. After that he moved swims a few times taking fish with each move and landing a beast of a Grassie that would not really fit in the net to be honest. After a little struggle it decided to do the Salmon leap leaving Dave soaking and pictureless. He then had a 35lb+ grassie the following day and said the first was a good 10lb bigger!! Dave was back down into 5 for the last 24 hrs and bagged a cracking 42lb+ Mirror which was a great end to his week.

Graham had the bulk of the fish infront of him, and with a good steady approach baiting 4 spots and keeping the rods moving between each of them he took 6 fish of 40lb+ with a huge deep framed mirror of 48lb+. Then after Johns 50lb+ on Friday I was called over to weigh and photograph another pb in the shape of a 50lb 4oz Mirror only 30 minutes apart from each other, Bliss. Once again another angler looking as high as a kite and very happy indeed.

The week finished on 37 fish with the 2x 50lb+ fish topping the list followed by 9 fish over 40lb to 48lb. 11 fish over 30lb+ (including 2 x 39lb and most mid to upper 30lb+)  3 grassys of 31lb,35,40lb+? 8 fish of 20lb+ to 29lb finished the week with some very pretty fish amongst them.

The wildlife is spectacular at the moment and certainly brings home why this is my favorite time of the year making you truly glad to be alive and well.

Our resident Osprey passed through this week and you can almost set your calendar by him, followed by the Cuckoo calling each morning & the Hoopoe reclaiming his nest site from the previous year. A whole host of other animals and birds are arriving by the day, and it looks set to be one of the most beautiful Springs I can remember, lets hope the fishing continues and a few more big fish grace the bank over the season!!!

Back soon with a blog written by one of the anglers from last week I would like to share with you!!!
