The Bittern Strikes

Posted: 14th Oct 2015

We are playing catch-up once again from last week, with 3 new chaps visiting the fishery hoping to enjoy the peace & tranquility alongside a few nice fish to Boot. Colin opted for Peg 1 with Brothers Andy & Rob splitting up in Pegs 3 & 5. The weather has started to turn very quickly of late, with the sun feeling very warm indeed when it came out, but in the shade it felt very cool indeed. The fish also had no pattern this week, coming out anytime over a 24 hr period which I think was a direct link to the weather.

We had a surprising visit this week from a bird which I have not seen at the fishery before, a Bittern!. I thought the week earlier I had a seen a glimpse of a Night Heron, but in hindsight it was the Bittern. I think it was Thursday morning after dropping the breakfasts off that I came past on the quad and there stood bolt upright was the on Peg 2 bold as brass!. I stopped the quad & he did'nt flinch, I shouted to Colin in Peg 1 (quietly) to grab his camera quickly and armed with a 600mm lens he managed some great shots of a stunning bird. I felt very privileged indeed to have this bird visit the lake, and once again it adds to the ever growing list of wildlife that abounds at the fishery!!

First off the mark was Andy on the saturday evening, not long after casting out which turned out to be the largest of the week at 47lb+. Not a lot of fish were caught this week and a few powerful fish lost, but all the chaps managed a 40lb+ fish a piece. I still think the bulk of the better fish stayed in the centre part of the lake, but Rob seemed to struggle getting to grips with them. The week ended on 11 fish landed with another 12 stockies under 20lb which I won't count. Why so many stockies this week is hard to say, and maybe it was a last feed-up before winter setting in? who knows. 4 fish over 40lb+ including a 47,46,42,40. 4 fish over 30lb+ & 3 x20lb+. All in all the lads enjoyed the week even though they had to work for the fish and next year you can settle a score chaps!!

This week has been different again being a big fish week with no stockies caught at all, but hey thats fishing!!!

Back soon with this weeks update and I still think the boys this week are going to land a couple more biggies, we shall see.
